How to be good at guitar?
March 27, 2009 | Filed Under Performing Arts | 5 Comments
I just got an acoustic guitar and plan on teaching myself how to play it. Besides learning the notes (which I already know, since I’ve played a bit of classical guitar before) and chords, what else do I need to do to become good? Like, what else do I need to learn? Any specific techniques? Any online tutorials you guys can redirect me to?
Yes, I know practice, blah blah blah is the obvious answer. Anything else?

Another version of Arthur Smith’s “Guitar Boogie”. This version by Tommy is one of my favourites. Great playing by the guitar master!

I play Bass guitar every other week or so, and after about two hours my fingers kill. Any quick-fix remedies?

I usually play acoustic or electric guitar, and I have calluses from that. However, about every other week I fill in playing Bass guitar in a band, and about two hours into playing (out of about 4 hours) my fingers begin to kill. Obviously, I could play the Bass more often, and build up calluses in the areas where the strings touch, but I don’t really have the ambition to do that. So I was wondering if anyone had any temporary remedies, such as tape or whatever?

What type of electric guitar might fit this description?

I’m a medium-level guitar player, 19 years old, looking to get an electric guitar. I would like it to be electric but also have somewhat of a soft and smooth sound, like acoustic but I don’t want an electric acoustic. I’d look for it to be in the mid to lower price range. Any suggestions?? (If I have made any sense.) Thanks for any help!
Would an Epiphone (possibly SG?) fit this description?
Why do colleges only teach Classical Guitar? Is it something good to learn and not chords or jazz or blues?
